We love reading at The Meadows and we are all working hard to become more fluent and confident. We have many initiatives in place throughout the school, including reading breakfasts, story sack project, fluency groups, individual reading time and interactive displays to inspire us! All classrooms have inviting reading areas where children can spend time with their favourite books. In Reception, one child each week has the opportunity to take home a special reading box, which contains books to read, a teddy bear and hot chocolate and treats to share during reading time. Our recommended book lists can be found on the curriculum section of our website if you would like more inspiration!
Karin Littlewood - Visiting Illustrator and Author
We were privileged recently to meet Karin Littlewood, illustrator and author of several well-known children's picture books, including 'Immi' and 'Star Girl.' We were able to hear Karin tell one of her best-known stories, and she showed us how she goes through the process of imagining, creating and writing a story. We had the chance to work alongside her and she inspired us to create some stories of our own. You can see some of her work by visiting www.karinlittlewood.com.
There are many spaces in which to enjoy reading at The Meadows. Reading is a key to learning. We use a reading spine throughout school to ensure that all children gain access to a wide range of texts and authors. Our recommended reading lists for each year group can also be found in the curriculum section of our website. Throughout the year, we look forward to welcoming families to our reading breakfasts and workshops, which are all planned to support children's reading development.
The slides from our most recent phonics presentation for families are available here. Please do not hesitate to ask if you missed the workshop and require more information or support. Our SATs presentation for families focused on reading this term. The slides are also available below.

World Book Day 2020
We have enjoyed celebrating World Book Day by introducing children to new stories and reading aloud together! Parents and carers joined us to read stories to children, and staff read their favourite books to classes; children signed up to choose which story they wanted to listen to most of all. We started the day with a Reading Breakfast in the hall and we have all been inspired! Thank you for joining us!
Don't forget that in our 'Curriculum and Learning' section, you can find information about our reading spine, recommended reading lists and phonics workshop information. Our aim is for all children to become confident, fluent readers!
